About Code
This month, we released new versions of Pyphen and cssselect2 🎉.
For Pyphen, it’s an update of several dictionaries: Spanish, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Danish; and an update of supported Python versions.
For cssselect2, this version adds support for CSS Notes selectors:
note-call, note-marker and note-callback.
These are new pseudo-elements required to have support of CSS Notes in WeasyPrint, on which we worked during the month. For the next version, WeasyPrint will be able to render things like:
We’re fixing some crashing cases with page overflow. But WeasyPrint v70 is coming soon! 👀
We also released a new version of webencodings.
This was the first release since 2017. Before this new release, we weren’t maintainers of this library. But webencodings is a dependency of WeasyPrint and wasn’t actively maintained, so we discussed with original maintainers and created a friendly fork 😄.
To finish this code part, we’re continuing to work on our new website.
Not About Code
On the not-code side, Lucie gave a talk about the impact of AI on open source software to the PyCon Togo 🇹🇬. The talk has been recorded, we’ll tell when the video is out.
To prepare the talk, we did some statistics on the WeasyPrint repository. Maybe we’ll write an article about all of that. In the meantime, you can have a look at the slides (in French).
The talk has also been accepted for the PyConFR (on the end of October in Biarritz, south-west of France) and for the Capitole du Libre (mid-November in Toulouse, also south-west of France). So, if you’re around there, don’t hesitate to ping us!
We also organised and went to the Python meetup in Lyon, always nice 😊.

This month, one of our readings we like to share is the article "Open Source Must Be Fun (Or It Will Die)" of Mike McQuaid. It resonates with how we’re feeling at the moment.
